Why Ethical Elephant Tourism Matters

Thailand is home to thousands of captive elephants, many of them former logging or riding-camp animals with nowhere else to go. Ethical sanctuaries like ours exist because the alternative — abandonment, or a return to hard labour — is far worse.

Every booking directly funds food (an adult elephant eats roughly 150–200kg a day), veterinary care, and land management. Just as importantly, choosing no-riding, no-show operators sends a signal to the wider industry about what travellers actually want.

We don’t expect every visitor to become an expert on elephant welfare overnight. But we do hope that a morning spent quietly observing the herd — rather than riding or watching them perform — changes the way people think about elephant tourism long after they’ve gone home.
